French Drain Cost Estimator

Use an early drainage estimate to organize the symptoms, likely water paths, and excavation scope—without confusing planning with a diagnosis.

Use a French drain estimate to organize the water problem

A French drain is one possible response to water movement, not a diagnosis. First describe where water appears, when it appears, the slope of the yard, downspout paths, grading, and whether the suspected source is surface runoff, groundwater, a foundation leak, or a plumbing problem.

Measure the drainage system, not just the wet spot

  • Record trench length, intended depth, access, soil, rock, roots, and excavation difficulty.
  • Decide between a French or curtain drain, catch basin, channel drain, swale, regrading, or downspout extension.
  • Document pipe, aggregate, filter fabric, cleanouts, outlet or sump discharge, and landscape restoration.
  • Keep foundation waterproofing, crawlspace work, pumping, and interior repairs as separate scopes.

Safety, diagnosis, and exclusions

An estimate cannot confirm the source of water or the performance of an outlet. Significant structural cracking, foundation movement, recurring flooding, mold, sewage, an unknown water source, or electrical exposure calls for appropriate drainage, structural, waterproofing, or environmental evaluation before excavation. Never dig until utilities are located, and do not enter an unsafe excavation.
